Each item in a BOM or Catalog can have an associated file and sometimes even several files. For example, an item can have a specification, drawing, and regulation document (e.g. RoHS).
To store the files in OpenBOM you can use a reference property mechanism. Each reference property keeps the link to the file and its storage. Check more about reference property in this properties and property types article (TBD- link)
OpenBOM can either link to the file located in the integrated cloud file storage (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) or upload files to the integrated OpenBOM storage. The reference property mechanism gives you access to integrated data storage.
Here is an example of how a link to the file can be stored in the Catalog. You can define as many properties as you need, so each item can have multiple files attached to it.
A reference property provides you with two options:
Access control to the files is fully managed by the access control of a BOM or Catalog. This means if you have access to a specific BOM, you will be able to access all the file links.
However, access to files in integrated OpenBOM file storage and connected cloud storage is different. The file in integrated OpenBOM cloud storage is always available, while a file in connected file storage (e.g. Google Drive) can be only accessed if you have a separate user account to access Google Drive. OpenBOM doesn’t provide federated access to cloud storage such as Google Drive and others.
